He has never not held at least a share of the lead following any of them.

(Photo by Hector Vivas/Getty Images) Getty ImagesMcIlroy posted a 73 on Saturday, his worst round of this year’s tournament by far. He opened the door to be caught and the field took full advantage. Players Champion Cameron Young broke through the open door more than anybody and equaled McIlroy’s 11-under score to date. The duo who were a part of the same group on Thursday and Friday will comprise the final pairing on Masters Sunday.
That Rory has spent so long dating back to last year with the burden of history to make upon his shoulders is hard to ignore. Last year was all about finally securing a green jacket to complete his Career Grand Slam. It had been over a decade since he’d won a major championship. Those narratives were put to bed, but with 18 holes standing between him and even more history (becoming just the fourth player ever to win consecutive Masters Championships) it is all fascinating to watch unfold.
Saturday seemed to be the day that the burden weighed most heavily on Rory. One can only take so much. Should he march through this fire unscathed the catharsis will likely not be the same as last year, but when you are this close it is hard not to want it all.
Sunday will be another important chapter in the Book of Rory McIlroy. Will he further define himself as the player of his generation? Can he add even more shine to his prized jewels?
Augusta National awaits to answer these questions.
